Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington. He was the second of three children born to William H. Gates Sr., an attorney, and Mary Maxwell Gates, a businesswoman and bank executive. Gates grew up in an upper-middle-class family and attended a private school, the Lakeside School, where he discovered his passion for computers.
At the age
of 13, Gates began programming in BASIC, a programming language for
microcomputers, on a Teletype Model 33 ASR terminal that he had access to at
his school. He became so proficient in programming that he was able to hack
into his school's computer system to get more computer time.

Gates
enrolled at Harvard University in 1973, but he dropped out in 1975 to start
Microsoft Corporation with his childhood friend Paul Allen.

In 1975, Gates and Allen created a programming language called BASIC for the Altair 8800 microcomputer. This led to the formation of Microsoft Corporation, which grew rapidly over the next few years as it developed and marketed software for personal computers.
